林書豪今夏以三年3600萬美元合約加盟籃網，黃蜂除了失去林書豪，中鋒傑佛森（Al Jefferson）、後衛柯特尼李（Courtney Lee）也成為自由球員且離隊。黃蜂今夏五名重要自由球員，只留下前鋒貝頓（Nocolas Batum）和威廉斯（Marvin Williams），戰力陣容深度都大受影響。
克里佛說，「我們今夏有五名自由球員，他們很顯然不可能全部留下，林書豪的多功能性和角色很難被取代，我們不容易找到替代者；林書豪可以打兩個位置，擅長突破，組織進攻。」
黃蜂上季打進東區季後賽第二輪，歸功於均?攻防，黃蜂是全聯盟四支進攻、防守效率都排名前10的球隊，黃蜂戰力如此出色的關鍵是陣容深度。克里佛表示，黃蜂在每個位置都有兩個球員可以輪換，但今夏黃蜂人手流失非常嚴重，其中林書豪的角色最難被取代。
